How to Make a Masala Chai Latte at Home
A masala chai latte is one of the most comforting drinks you can make at home — warm, spiced, creamy, and deeply aromatic. The best part? It takes less than 10 minutes and costs a fraction of what you'd pay at a café.
What is Masala Chai?
Masala chai (literally "spiced tea" in Hindi) is a bold black tea brewed with a blend of warming spices — typically cardamom, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and black pepper. It originated in India and has been a daily ritual for millions of people for centuries.
A chai latte takes that spiced tea base and adds steamed milk for a creamy, café-style drink. Our Masala Chai blends robust black tea with cardamom, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon — everything you need for the perfect cup.
What You'll Need
- 2 tsp Masala Chai (loose leaf or 1 tea bag)
- 4 oz hot water (200°F / 93°C)
- 6 oz milk of choice (oat, whole, or almond all work great)
- 1–2 tsp honey, maple syrup, or sugar (optional)
- A small saucepan or milk frother
How to Make a Masala Chai Latte
1. Brew a strong concentrate
Steep 2 tsp of Masala Chai in 4 oz of hot water (200°F) for 5 minutes. Use more tea than usual — you want a strong concentrate so the spice flavor comes through once you add milk.
2. Sweeten to taste
While the tea is still hot, stir in honey, maple syrup, or sugar if desired. Chai is traditionally sweet — don't be shy.
3. Steam or froth your milk
Heat 6 oz of milk to around 150°F and froth until creamy. No frother? Heat it in a small saucepan and whisk vigorously, or shake it in a jar and microwave for 30 seconds.
4. Combine and serve
Pour the chai concentrate into your mug, then pour the steamed milk over it. Finish with a pinch of cinnamon or cardamom on top for presentation.
Iced Masala Chai Latte
For an iced version, brew your concentrate double-strength, let it cool, then pour over ice and add cold milk. It's just as good — maybe better on a warm day.
Tips for the Best Chai Latte
- Brew strong — weak chai gets lost in the milk. Always use more tea than you think you need
- Oat milk is the best dairy-free option — its natural sweetness complements the spices perfectly
- Don't skip the sweetener — a touch of honey balances the bold spices and rounds out the flavor
- Spice it up — add a pinch of extra cardamom or fresh grated ginger if you like it bold
Why Masala Chai?
Beyond the incredible flavor, masala chai is packed with benefits. Black tea provides a steady caffeine boost, while the spices — especially ginger and cardamom — are known for their anti-inflammatory and digestive properties. It's a drink that's as good for you as it tastes.
