How to Order Fresh-Roasted Coffee Online: What to Look For
Ordering coffee online sounds simple — but if you've ever received a bag that tasted flat, stale, or just plain disappointing, you know it's not as straightforward as clicking "add to cart." The difference between a great online coffee experience and a bad one comes down to a few key things. Here's exactly what to look for.
1. Roast Date, Not Expiration Date
The most important thing on any bag of coffee is the roast date — not a "best by" date. Coffee is at its peak flavor between 5 and 21 days after roasting. After that, it starts to go stale.
If a brand only lists an expiration date (usually 12–18 months out), that's a red flag. It likely means the coffee was roasted in bulk and has been sitting in a warehouse. Always look for a roast date — and ideally, order from a roaster that roasts to order.
At The Amsterdam Coffee Haus, every order is roasted fresh before it ships. No warehoused stock, no stale beans.
2. Single-Origin vs. Blend — Know What You're Buying
Single-origin coffees come from one specific farm, region, or country. They tend to have more distinct, complex flavor profiles — think fruity, floral, or bright notes that reflect their origin.
Blends combine beans from multiple origins to create a consistent, balanced flavor — typically smoother and more approachable, great for espresso or everyday drinking.
Neither is better — it depends on what you're looking for. Our Brazilian Bailarina Single-Origin is a great example of a complex, origin-forward coffee, while our Classic Dutch Roast delivers a reliable, bold everyday cup.
3. Ethical Sourcing Matters
Great coffee starts at the farm. Look for brands that are transparent about where their beans come from and how farmers are compensated. Terms like "direct trade," "fair trade," or "ethically sourced" are good signals — but the best brands will tell you the actual origin story behind their beans.
We source all of our beans with ethics and sustainability at the forefront — because coffee that's good for the farmer tastes better in your cup.
4. Grind Options
If you don't have a grinder at home, make sure the roaster offers pre-ground options — and ideally lets you choose your grind size (coarse for French press, medium for drip, fine for espresso). Freshly ground is always best, but a good pre-ground from a fresh roast still beats a stale whole bean.
5. Shipping Speed
Even the freshest roast loses its edge if it sits in a shipping facility for two weeks. Look for roasters that ship within 1–3 days of roasting and use reliable carriers. Most quality online roasters will ship within a few business days of your order.
Houston customers ordering from The Amsterdam Coffee Haus typically receive their order within 3–5 business days — fresh, sealed, and ready to brew.
