What is Moroccan Mint Tea? Benefits & How to Brew It

Moroccan mint tea is more than just a drink — it's a ritual. Across North Africa and the Middle East, the preparation and sharing of mint tea is a gesture of hospitality, friendship, and warmth. Once you taste it, you'll understand why.

What is Moroccan Mint Tea?

Moroccan mint tea is a blend of gunpowder green tea and fresh or dried spearmint leaves, traditionally sweetened with sugar and poured from a height to create a light foam. The result is a refreshing, aromatic cup that's simultaneously cooling and warming — perfect hot or iced.

Our Moroccan Mint Tea blends premium green tea with spearmint and peppermint for a smooth, vibrant cup that captures the spirit of the tradition.

Benefits of Moroccan Mint Tea

  • Digestive support — mint has long been used to soothe the stomach and aid digestion, especially after meals
  • Natural energy boost — the green tea base provides a gentle caffeine lift without the jitteriness of coffee
  • Rich in antioxidants — green tea is packed with catechins that support overall health
  • Cooling effect — mint creates a natural cooling sensation, making it ideal iced in summer
  • Stress relief — the aroma of mint is known to reduce anxiety and promote calm focus

How to Brew Moroccan Mint Tea

Traditional Moroccan mint tea is brewed in a small teapot and poured into decorative glasses. Here's how to do it at home:

What you'll need:

  • 1 tsp Moroccan Mint Tea (or 1 tea bag)
  • 8 oz hot water (175°F / 80°C)
  • Optional: 1–2 tsp sugar or honey
  • A teapot or mug

Steps:

1. Heat your water
Bring water to 175°F (80°C) — not boiling. Green tea is delicate and boiling water will make it bitter.

2. Steep for 3–4 minutes
Add your tea and let it steep. Don't over-steep — 4 minutes is the sweet spot for a bright, minty cup without bitterness.

3. Sweeten if desired
Traditionally, Moroccan mint tea is quite sweet. Add sugar or honey to taste.

4. Pour from a height
If using a teapot, pour into your glass from a height of about 12 inches. This aerates the tea and creates the signature light foam on top.

5. Enjoy hot or iced
Moroccan mint tea is delicious both ways. For iced, brew double-strength and pour over ice.

Moroccan Mint Tea vs Regular Mint Tea

Regular mint tea (or peppermint tea) is typically a herbal infusion with no tea leaves — just mint. Moroccan mint tea uses a green tea base, which adds depth, a gentle caffeine boost, and a more complex flavor profile. The combination of green tea's earthiness with mint's brightness is what makes it so distinctive.
